A civil funeral is available to anyone, offering an alternative to religious ceremonies. While some religious content can be included, the ceremony focuses on giving tribute to your loved one and celebrating their life.
We understand that a civil funeral will need to be organised as quickly as possible. Please contact us directly to start arrangements. Alternatively you may wish to ask your funeral director, friend or relative to contact us on your behalf.
You will be able to create your very own unique ceremony with the help and advice of the registration celebrant. Together, we will help you to pay tribute to your loved one, celebrating their life and the memories you shared.
Everyone has different wishes; your choices may be influenced by religious and cultural traditions or perhaps by the final wishes of the person who has died. You may like to include family and friends, special pieces of music, poems or readings.
Once the draft ceremony is written you will have the opportunity to read it through to make changes.
Once you, a friend or relative have requested a civil funeral, a registration celebrant will contact you to arrange a meeting. You can register the death at the same time.
The registration celebrant will talk through your options. This will be a discussion about the person who has died and the kind of ceremony that you would like. You may find it comforting to have a relative or a friend with you at this time. Due to office size, we ask only two people attend the appointment. The celebrant will assist you as much as possible so that your instructions will be carried out during the ceremony.
The ceremony can be held in a wide variety of places including crematoriums however, a civil funeral ceremony may not be held in churches or buildings that have any religious connection. The East Riding of Yorkshire has a number of suitable buildings and the celebrant will be able to help you with your choice, depending on how many will attend or personal wishes.
You can submit a request for a memorial bench somewhere that was important to your loved one. This allows friends and family to visit an area to remember them and happy memories. For more information on how to submit a request and prices, please visit the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website.
A civil funeral costs £150 and includes the following:
A scattering of ashes ceremony is £50 which includes the attendance of the registration celebrant and a few words said on your behalf.
The Registration and Celebratory Service can support you during the funeral arrangements. For details on cemeteries and churchyards owned and maintained by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, fees of a burial and arranging a headstone, please visit the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website.
Unfortunately, requests to scatter ashes in council owned areas, such as public parks or Sewerby Hall, are not able to be approved. For full information on scattering ashes, please visit the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website.
